A Valley of the Sun resident for 18 years, Michael Mazzocco’s journey is as dynamic and diverse as the communities he serves.
Born on Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma while his father served in the Vietnam War, Michael’s early years were spent on military bases across Oklahoma, Georgia, and Alaska. These formative experiences sparked a lifelong passion for travel, culture, and connection.
The son of Melody—a Montessori directress and citizen of the Delaware Nation—and Ronald—an Army veteran and UAW leader—Michael was raised with a deep commitment to service and community. After living in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; and New York City, he made Phoenix his home in 2006. Since then, he has built a thriving small business and an extraordinary legacy of civic and cultural impact.
Since founding Michael Mazzocco Events in 2017, he has redefined the Valley’s fundraising landscape. His events have raised more than $500,000 for over 20 local nonprofits and arts organizations—including the Phoenix Symphony, Ballet Arizona, Free Arts of Arizona, Childsplay, Aunt Rita’s Foundation, Read Better Be Better, and Check for a Lump. His hallmark is transforming events into powerful, purpose-driven experiences that deepen donor engagement and drive meaningful impact.
Michael’s true strength lies in building bridges across diverse communities. He served six years on the board of the Greater Phoenix Equality Chamber of Commerce, including four as Board President. Under his leadership, the Chamber experienced significant growth—hiring its first full-time executive director, expanding its programs, and nearly doubling membership. Michael also helped establish the Equality Chamber Foundation, furthering the organization’s mission to foster inclusive economic opportunity.
Appointed by Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, Michael currently serves as Chair of the City of Phoenix Human Relations Commission, where he leads efforts to promote equity and eliminate discrimination across the city. He is also a board member of the Phoenix Gay Men’s Chorus, where he helped organize a historic National Anthem performance at an Arizona Cardinals game—the first of its kind for a gay men’s chorus.
Michael recently concluded a board term with the Arizona Costume Institute, supporting the Phoenix Art Museum’s fashion collection, and continues to serve on the committee for the annual Holiday Luncheon. In 2025, he will chair the Children’s Museum Gala, further solidifying his role as a leader in the arts and culture space.
A proud alumnus of Valley Leadership (Catalyze Class 1 and Explore Class 1), Michael embodies the spirit of civic engagement. His personal motto—“If I have time to watch TV, I have time to change the world”—drives his tireless advocacy and inspired volunteerism.
Michael lives in Phoenix’s City Council District 4 with his husband, Isaac, and their beloved dogs, Vivienne and Alexandra. As a proud Indigenous small business owner from the Delaware Nation, Michael’s dedication to community isn’t just a profession—it’s his purpose. With vision, passion, and heart, he continues to shape a more inclusive and vibrant future for all.
